How much does
aerial photo cost?

There is no single price for aerial drone photography in Barcelona: it depends on the number of images, the retouching, the permits and the usage rights. Here we explain, with no small print, what drives the quote and how to get it right from day one.

Right after asking about video, the question we receive most is "how much does aerial drone photography cost?". And, as with video, the honest answer is that there is no single rate. A couple of images of a cove on the Costa Brava and a full report of a resort with dozens of retouched photos have little in common, even though both are "drone photography". The price of aerial photography is built from a handful of very specific factors, and knowing them helps you ask for an accurate quote and compare offers with a clear head.

In this guide we break down what raises or lowers the cost of an aerial drone photo session, give some realistic indicative ranges —with no fake figures— and explain why, here too, cheap often ends up costing more. The aim is for you to understand where the money goes before requesting your personalised drone photography rate.

The factors that set the price

When you ask for an aerial drone photography quote, these are the elements that most determine the final amount:

  • Number of final images. Delivering three selected photos for a cover is not the same as a report of forty images for a real-estate or tourism catalogue. Each final photo involves flight time, selection and, above all, hours of retouching.
  • Retouching and HDR. A "raw" image comes straight from the camera; a finished image goes through development, HDR merging to control highlights and shadows, clean-up, perspective correction and colour grading. The more careful the post-processing, the more hours behind it.
  • Locations and travel. A single location near Barcelona is much more affordable than several locations spread across Catalonia. Travel, light windows and set-up time at each spot add to the quote.
  • Permits and CTR zone. The city of Barcelona is controlled airspace: photographing there legally involves coordination with air traffic control, prior communications and, often, a risk assessment. These procedures have a cost in time and management that is reflected in the price.
  • Use and rights. A photo for a social media profile does not have the same value as an image for an advertising campaign distributed in the media. The scope of use and the assignment of rights are also part of the price of aerial photography.

Indicative ranges

Giving an exact figure without knowing the project would be misleading you. What we can do is order jobs by magnitude so you have a mental reference before asking for a quote:

Indicative ranges

Simple session. A few aerial images at a single easy location, outside a complicated urban area, with light retouching or delivery of the selected material without intensive post-processing. It is the most affordable range: little flight time and minimal retouching.

Professional report. Half a day or a full day, one or two locations, a wide selection of images with full retouching, HDR and colour. Most real-estate, hotel or tourism reports fall here.

Campaign production. Several sessions, multiple locations —often with special permits in the city of Barcelona—, a large volume of final images and elaborate retouching with broad assignment of rights. This is the top range, because it involves logistics, permit management and many hours of editing.

These ranges are only a guide: the real price depends on the factors in the previous section. The reliable way to know what your session will cost is to ask for a quote telling us how many images you need, where and when you want to fly and what you will use the photos for.

Why cheap ends up costing more

Online you will find surprisingly low aerial photography offers. There is often a reason: the operator is not legal. Flying a drone professionally in Barcelona requires being registered as an operator with AESA, having certified pilots, civil liability insurance and managing the ENAIRE permits and, in urban areas, those of the Police of the Generalitat – Mossos d'Esquadra. All of this costs money and time, and anyone who skips it can offer prices that don't add up anywhere.

  • Illegal operators. If someone photographs the city of Barcelona "with no fuss" at a bargain price, they are probably flying without the necessary authorisations. The risk is yours and theirs.
  • Fines. The penalties for flying without permits in controlled airspace are high and can also fall on the client who commissioned the work.
  • No insurance. If an uncovered drone causes damage to people or property, who is liable? A serious operator always flies insured.

To understand exactly what is needed to fly legally in the city, we have prepared a guide to drone permits in Barcelona where we explain the AESA regulations, the ENAIRE zones and the question of the CTR zone step by step. An honest quote includes all this invisible work; one that is too cheap almost never does.

What a drone.barcelona quote includes

When we send you an aerial photography rate, we want you to know exactly what is inside. One of our aerial photography quotes usually covers:

  • Full permit management and coordination with air traffic control when needed, as an AESA-authorised operator.
  • Certified pilots and insurance for civil liability on every flight.
  • High-resolution and RAW capture, with maximum latitude for retouching and colour.
  • Retouching and post-production: development, HDR, clean-up, perspective correction and grading, with the agreed number of final images.
  • Clear usage rights tailored to the scope of your project.
In short

The price of aerial drone photography is not defined by a catalogue rate but by what you want to achieve: how many images, at what level of retouching, where and for what use. Tell us the goal and we will give you an accurate figure, with no surprises and with the entire legal side covered.

If what you are after is movement and not a still image, take a look at the sister guide on how much a drone video costs. And if you want to see all our drone rates in Barcelona laid out neatly, we have also gathered them on a single page. In the journal you will find more articles to prepare your project.

§ — Questions

Frequently
asked

What makes aerial drone photography more expensive?

The price goes up with the number of final images, the level of retouching and HDR, the number of locations and, above all, whether you need to fly in an urban area of Barcelona —which requires special permits and coordination with air traffic control. As an AESA-authorised operator we handle the entire legal side, and that is part of the real cost of work done properly.

How many aerial photos does a commission include?

It depends on the project. A session can deliver anything from a handful of selected and retouched images to dozens of photos for a real-estate or tourism catalogue. When you ask for a quote, tell us how many final images you need and what for, and we will tailor the session and the retouching to that figure.

Are permits and rights included in the quote?

Yes. Handling the ENAIRE permits and, when needed, those of the Police of the Generalitat – Mossos d'Esquadra to fly in urban areas is already included in the quote, along with the assignment of usage rights tailored to your project. We operate with valid operator licences and civil liability insurance. If you want to understand the regulations, we explain them in our guide to drone permits in Barcelona.
